Family game night: choosing board games, card games and puzzles

by Other Center
A family table set for game night with a board game in progress, a deck of cards and a partly finished jigsaw puzzle

Quick answer: pick games by three numbers printed on every box: player count, play time and minimum age. For a mixed family, choose something that plays well with your usual group size in under an hour, with rules a ten-year-old can follow. Keep one quick card game for weeknights and a puzzle for evenings when people want something quieter.

The games that earn a permanent spot are the ones that come off the shelf again. That has less to do with how clever a game is and more to do with whether it fits your table, your schedule and the youngest person playing.

Read the box before you read the reviews

Player count matters most. A game listed for 2 to 4 players may feel most lively with three or four, so if your group is often five or six, look for games that go higher. Play time on the box usually assumes players who know the rules, so add some time for the first game. Age ratings reflect rule complexity and reading, and for young children they also flag small parts. Games with small pieces are labeled for ages 3 and up; keep them away from toddlers and babies.

Gateway strategy games for the whole table

"Gateway" games teach in about ten minutes but still give older kids and adults real decisions. The Days of Wonder Ticket to Ride board game, here in its 2025 refresh, has players collecting cards and claiming train routes across North America, and the box lists ages 8 and up. AEG Cascadia is a calm tile-laying game about building habitats for wildlife that plays from one to four. For quick turns and a short teach, Asmodee Splendor asks two to four players to collect gem tokens and buy cards.

Card games: quick, portable and easy to teach

A deck in a small box fits in a bag for holidays, waiting rooms and grandparents' houses. PlayMonster Five Crowns is a rummy-style game for one to seven players, ages 8 and up, that changes the wild card each round. For a louder table, Exploding Kittens Rage Mode plays two to five with attack cards and a figurine. See the full range of card games.

Games for younger children

Preschoolers tend to enjoy short, cooperative games most, where everyone wins or loses together, so nobody ends the night in tears. Look for big pieces, movement and turns that last seconds. Peaceable Kingdom Monkey Around is a movement game for ages 2 and up with action cards and a banana beanbag. For more toddler and preschool picks, the baby and toddler toys collection is sorted for the youngest players.

Puzzles for quieter evenings

Jigsaw puzzles suit nights when people want to talk, listen to music or drift in and out. Piece count sets the commitment: 300 to 500 pieces can be finished in an evening, while 1,000 pieces usually take several sittings. A roll-up mat or a board with raised edges lets you clear the table without breaking up your progress; the Piecevana folding puzzle board has a felt surface and raised edges sized for 1,000 pieces. Active games for a bigger crowd

When cousins arrive and a board game cannot seat everyone, active games help. Table tennis sets, tabletop games and safe indoor dart boards sit in our game room and outdoor games collection. Clear breakable items from the room before anything with a ball comes out.

Before you buy: a short checklist

  • Count your usual players and check the range on the box.
  • Pick a play time that fits a school night.
  • Match the age rating to the youngest regular player.
  • Keep at least one game that teaches in five minutes.
  • Add a card game for travel and a puzzle for quiet nights.
  • Store small pieces in bags inside the box, away from toddlers.

Common questions

What is a good first strategy game for a family?

Look for games that teach in ten minutes and play in under an hour, with simple turns but real choices. Route-building and tile-laying games are common starting points, and many list ages 8 and up.

How do I choose a game for five or more players?

Check the player range on the box and look for games designed for larger groups, such as party, drawing or card games. Many strategy games cap at four players, and some feel slow even when they allow more.

Are cooperative games better for young children?

They often are. In cooperative games everyone works toward one goal, so younger players can join in without the sting of losing to older siblings, and adults can guide without taking over.

How many pieces should a family puzzle have?

For a single evening with kids, 100 to 500 pieces is a comfortable range. Adults and older kids often enjoy 1,000-piece puzzles spread over several nights, especially with a board or mat to protect progress.
